Wireless Radiation Poses Health Risks - Doctors Demand Precaution!

As of 5/2023 - 2% of the public is still concerned that exposure to radiofrequency from mobile phone masts is harmful to human health. This statistic is a stark reminder that, despite the lack of scientific evidence to support the notion that exposure to radiofrequency from mobile phone masts is harmful to human health, a significant portion of the public still holds this belief. This highlights the importance of continuing to educate the public on the safety of mobile phone masts and the lack of evidence to support the notion that they are harmful. 35% of the general public believe that mobile phone masts should not be placed near schools or residential areas due to health risks. This statistic is a powerful indicator of the public’s concern about the potential health risks associated with mobile phone masts near schools and residential areas. It shows that a significant portion of the population is aware of the potential dangers and is taking a proactive stance in protecting the...

Call To Ban Natural Gas Drilling Heard Around The World, But Not Heeded

By Theodora Filis Environmental and health concerns have people around the world calling for a ban on natural gas drilling. The global warming effects of methane in natural gas are many times greater than the global warming effects of carbon dioxide. Subsidies granted to gas drilling promote the use of fossil fuels and undermine the development of conservation, efficiency, and renewable energy sources. From the Permian Basin (western Texas and the southeastern part of New Mexico) to the Paris Basin, from Pennsylvania to Poland it is clear that in the next 20 years, the global natural gas industry will not only be far bigger and more valuable than it is in 2011, but it will also be much more diversified. Communities around the world will be faced with costs for baseline testing of water pollutants, emergency response, health department monitoring of complaints, property tax assessment changes, building and repairing roads, and wastewater treatment facilities. Samples of flowback...

Storms & Subzero Temps, Worse Case Scenario? Don’t Count On It!

By Theodora Filis Climate experts predicted that this year’s winter season could bring the snowiest, coldest weather in Europe for the past century. They were right! The timing was a bit off though, winter didn’t officially begin until December 21st, but snow and ice have wreaked havoc throughout Europe and North America all month.  Snowstorms in Europe have caused the death of over 100 people due to the cold weather conditions. The death toll in Poland is now up to 42 people. Ukraine, the Czech Republic, and Germany have been hit significantly in the last few days with death tolls rising under cold temperatures as low as -33C: A cold front continues to sweep across Europe with numerous snowstorms and subzero temperatures being reported in Belgium, Austria, France, Italy, the UK, and other places. In the Austrian province of Styria, 2 people froze to death in -20C temperatures trying to get home. Freezing temperatures and heavy snowfall have left travelers stranded across Europe...

Ten EU Countries Create Europe's 1st Renewable Energy Grid

By: Theodora Filis Belgium, Denmark, France, Germany, Ireland, Luxembourg, the Netherlands, Norway, Sweden, and the United Kingdom have teamed up to plan a €30 billion ($43 billion) sustainable energy project in the North Sea as part of efforts to address climate change and expand renewable energy.  The plan is to connect the alternative energy projects of these ten nations to create Europe's first renewable electricity grid through a 6,000km network. The grid, which will be fully operational in 2020, would allow the EU countries to share renewable electricity throughout the continent and the British Isles. A shared-nation grid would also allow the British Isles and mainland European nations to diversify their energy supplies, while at the same time cutting emissions and developing technology to ensure resources in an uncertain future. “Large-scale interconnection with our European neighbors is vital if we are to connect up our massive offshore wind potential and integrate it i...

Millennium Stadium Wants To Be “Certifiable”

By Theodora Filis Millennium Stadium is not satisfied with just playing host to football tournaments during the 2012 Olympics, it wants to become the UK’s first certifiably “green” venue as well. ( Millennium Stadium) Based in Cardiff, the stadium operators are looking to meet the requirements for British Standard accreditation, which is accepted as credentials throughout the events industry. Already earning the award are Earls Court and Olympia in London, but Millennium Stadium aims to be the first to receive the official green mark from the regulatory group. Rainwater harvesting in the pitch irrigation system, infra-red controls in the toilets to prevent unnecessary flushing, and meters installed to monitor energy and water consumption have started the ball rolling at the iconic multi-event venue. The body which awards the British Standard Green mark will monitor the stadium’s “sustainability journey” with a pre-assessment in December. The stadium’s manager, Gerry Toms said that...

Welsh Environment Minister Puts Funding Behind Renewable Energy

By Theodora Filis  A unique project to test clean electricity generation from the tides off the West Wales coast is to receive a £1.4m EU funding boost said Environment Minister, Jane Davidson. “Earlier this year I launched our energy policy statement A Low Carbon Revolution which outlines that Wales has the potential to produce nearly twice the amount of electricity it currently uses, through wholly renewable sources by 2025.” Although not yet widely used, tidal power has potential for future electricity generation. Tides are more predictable than wind energy and solar power. Among sources of renewable energy, tidal power has traditionally suffered from relatively high cost and limited availability of sites with sufficiently high tidal ranges or flow velocities, thus constricting its total availability. However, many recent technological developments and improvements, both in design (e.g. dynamic tidal power, tidal lagoons) and turbine technology (e.g. new axial turbines, cro...

Cloned Meats. To Debate or Not To Debate? Sorry, that question’s not allowed!

By Theodora Filis Research for this article began when I was asked to be a guest on China Radio’s  Today on Beyond Beijing  contributing to their panel discussion on cloned meats. I was honored, but cloned meats? What did I know about cloned meats? Nothing, and apparently, I wasn’t alone. Kept in the dark would be an accurate description of how American consumers are treated when it comes to cloned meats and food from their offspring. Reproductive cloning is a centuries old technology used to generate an animal that has the same nuclear DNA as another animal — Bio 101 ends here. Farm animal cloning, on the other hand, is a new technology.  While scientists boast that cloning preserves elite genetics, further studies suggest the process may actually result in subtle changes in food composition which could pose food-consumption risks. In the US, the Food and Drug Administration (FDA) does not regulate the sale of milk or meat from offspring of c...
