The Fight for Water

By Theodora Filis                     (Video: World Water Day 2023: UN Warns of potential global crisis) Water scarcity is an increasingly frequent and worrying phenomenon that affects at least 11% of the European population and 17% of the EU territory. Since 1980, the number of droughts in Europe has increased, and they have become more severe, costing an estimated €100 billion over the past 30 years. Everyone agrees that we are in the midst of a global freshwater crisis. Around the world, rivers, lakes, and aquifers are dwindling faster than we can possibly replenish them. Increased global population and industrial and household chemicals are also causing a decrease in freshwater. A drought’s impact is far-reaching and touches every part of our ecosystem, from human life to crops and vegetation, and even to livestock. Water shortages also affect wildfires; dried-out land can feed fires and make them larger, and a lack of water also a...

Low Income Mothers Forced To Use Infant Formulas Containing Cancer Causing Ingredients

By Theodora Filis Today, low income mothers receiving government subsidies are being forced to use genetically modified (GM) baby formula, and those m others who choose organic baby formula for their developing children, are denied it. Why are the poor being forced to feed their children carcinogenic, developmentally-altering, genetically modified food, and nothing else? Milk or soy protein is the basis of most infant formulas.  Enfamil EnfaCare, Gerber Good Start, and Similac, all contain GM soy, corn, and traces of pesticides and herbicides.  Ingredients in infant products often contain soy, or milk from cows injected with Recombinant Bovine Growth Hormone (rBGH). rBGH is a synthetic (man-made) hormone that is marketed to dairy farmers to increase milk production in cows. It has been used in the US since it was approved by the Food and Drug Administration (FDA) in 1993, but its use is not permitted in the European Union, Canada, and other countrie...

By Theodora Filis Some of the world's largest food companies removed the chemical Bisphenol A (also known as BPA) from packaging, amid growing concerns it causes a wide range of human illnesses including heart disease and breast cancer. Nestlé, the world's largest food manufacturer, said it will stop putting BPA into US products by 2013. Heinz is removing BPA from baby food in the UK. General Mills has already removed BPA from its Muir Glen tomato range, and Campbell Soups says it has done "hundreds" of tests exploring alternatives. Coca-Cola, declined to disclose a timetable for its withdrawal, saying that BPA is safe. BPA, is an estrogen-mimicking chemical found in food and drink that toughens the packaging of many tins, glass jars, and plastic bottles, and the casings of electronic gadgets such as TVs, mobile phones, and laptop computers. Some scientists claim BPA is an endocrine disruptor that affects hormones and could be causing breast and prostate c...
